No Separate Entrance Exam for AIIMS, JIPMER From 2020 – Only NEET!

Update on: 05 Oct 2019, 04:25 PM

Are you an AIIMS or JIPMER aspirant or do you know anyone who is preparing to crack these competitive exams this year? If your answer is yes, we have a crucial news for you! NTA is going to bring the changes in the history of these entrance examinations of the country.

The Union HRD Ministerย Harsh Vardhan has confirmed that from 2020, admission to all medical colleges including AIIMS and JIPMER will be facilitated through NEET Medical Entrance Exam. And NEET will be organized by National Testing Agency, NTA.

Currently, admissions to all medical colleges except AIIMS and JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research) are done through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). But from 2020 academic year, NEET will be the only medical entrance exam for UG programs. Aspirants will have to sit for a single entrance examination for getting a seat in medical colleges across the country. The announcement comes after the enactment of National Medical Commission Act.

โ€œThis will help set common standards in medical education sector in the country,โ€ HRD Minister Vardhan said.

More Medical Seats (close to 1600) to be Added by 2020

After the confirmation provided by the Minister, it has become clear that AIIMS and JIPMER, will not have to adhere and accept NEET scores for admission. The decision will also add over 1600 MBBS and BDS seats to the tally of total seats that are allotted to medical aspirants through National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test-Under Graduate (NEET-UG) exam. According to the details shared by the MCI, the total number of undergraduate medical seats available in India stands at 76,000 which are spread across 539 colleges across India.

History of NEET

National Eligibility cum Entrance Test was announced to be held by the Government of India for the first time on 5th May, 2013 for admission to both Undergraduate and Postgraduate Medical courses. But on 18th July, 2013, Supreme Court cancelled the exam and announced the decision in favor of 115 petitions that MCI could not interfere with the admission process done by colleges.

The exam was scrapped in 2013 but MCI didnโ€™t lose its efforts and achieved the success to conduct a single common medical entrance exam in 2016 across the country. In 2016, it was conducted in two phases i.e. NEET-I and NEET-II on May 1 and July 24 respectively. This exam then replaced All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) and most of the other state and national medical entrance exams of the country.
