Section-Wise Preparation Tips for IEO Olympiad Exam

The IEO exam is an objective-type written test with a duration of 60 minutes. It includes 35 objective-type questions for classes 1 to 4 and 50 objective-type questions for classes 5 to 12. The question paper for all classes is divided into 4 sections:

1. Word and Structure Knowledge
The Word and Structure Knowledge section tests the grammatical knowledge of a student on various topics of English Grammar. You may get questions mainly in the form of Fill in the blanks, Error spotting, Vocabulary (synonym, antonym, spelling), Picture based questions (for classes 1-2).
Error Spotting
In error spotting questions, a sentence will be given with an error and the candidate has to find out the part of the sentence that has an error. To find out the answer to such types of questions it is imperative that you are well versed with the basic grammar rules regarding the subject, object, tenses, parts of speech, verbs, and more. Tips to solve Error Spotting in IEO Olympiad:
Step 1. First, read the complete sentence carefully. In most cases, you will be able to detect the error in the first go if you have sound knowledge of English grammar.
Step 2. While reading the entire sentence, you must carefully look for grammatical errors such as prepositions, articles, conjunction, tenses, etc.
Step 3. If you still cannot detect the error or you are still unaware of the correct answer, then you must reread each individual part of the sentence and closely examine which part consists of an error or sounds odd.

Fill In the Blanks
In Fill in blank questions, questions have a sentence with a blank or more and with one or more words missing. Four options are provided, candidates are required to choose the right option (word/set of words) for each blank based on the sentence’s requirement to be complete as well as meaningful. The sentence may require a noun, verb, adjective, preposition, conjunction, idiom, etc. in order to be complete.
Tips to solve the fill-in-the-blank questions in IEO Olympiad:
Step 1. Read the sentence carefully and try to fill in the missing word without looking at the given options.
Step 2. Then, choose the word from the options that best replaces the word you had thought initially.
Step 3. Insert the word that you have chosen from the option and read the sentence again. Check that the word you have put in the blank enables you to read the sentence correctly.
Step 4. After filling in all the blanks, once again read the sentence and make sure that there is no grammatical error in the sentence.

2. Reading
This section mainly aims at testing candidates’ knowledge of vocabulary and grasping power to deduce relevant details from the given passage. Here are some tips and tricks to prepare or to attempt the Reading section’s questions effectively.
Tips to solve Reading Section Questions in IEO Olympiad:
- First, go through all the questions before beginning to read the passage, so that while reading the passage, you will focus on the answers you are looking for.
- Reading all the questions first will give you an insight into the information useful for attempting the questions.
- Now read the passage slowly and while doing so underline the important points, keywords, etc. which relate to the asked questions.
- Reread the passage a second time in case any question doesn’t click the first time.
- If there is a question related to synonyms and antonyms, reread the line 2- 3 times in which that word occurs in the passage. This way you can make out the sense of the word if you don’t know the meaning of that word.

3. Spoken and Written Expression
This section of the IEO Olympiad tests a student’s ability on situation-based variation in functions like apology, introduction, request, conversation, etc. This section is to deliberate a candidate’s knowledge of English as a language.
