11 Helpful Tips to avoid Procrastination

We come across many situations where we try to postpone our tasks. There could be many reasons behind delaying our work. Many students are found to keep a hold-on in their preparations and at the time of exam, they start to panic. The habit of delaying your work results in pain and stress that goes hand-in-hand when you leave too many tasks for the last minute.

What could be the cause behind this adjournment? To answer this, you have to first discover why you are procrastinating? You should understand what is making you to delay your work.

  • Are you afraid of the task? Most often, it has been observed that it is the fear of getting started in the first place and also the troubles one has to face in starting a new task, are the reason for delaying the task.
  • Are you resistant to hard work? Sometimes, it is merely the thought of doing hard work in order to accomplish the new task which incite the feeling of postponement in our mind and we, thus, keep delaying it.

1. Become more self-aware

Once you are aware of the task and consequences of delaying it, you will feel motivated to start the task. Students will learn that delaying their preparation for exam can result in low score. Hence, understanding the consequences of delaying your task will encourage you to start it as soon as possible.

2. Set your goals

Getting started with any new work requires us to learn the to-do list. Knowing which will only help in to set target to accomplish the task. Students must make a list of  topics and sub-topics that are important for the exams and need to be covered. After this, allot time for completion of each of topic.

3. Create a Time-Table and develop discipline

Creating a time-table for your task can prevent procrastination as it gives a deadline for your work. Once you are aware of the time limit for completion of your task, it will encourage you to start your task and finish it in the given time.

4. Segregate your work into small steps

Avoid doing many tasks altogether. Break your task into smaller fragments and do one at a time. This will prevent putting more pressure on you. Moreover, multitasking might lead to mental exhaustion which will ultimately, reduce your productivity.

Students should take one topic of study at a time and then move on to another topic. This will help to understand the learned topic better and retain it for longer time.

5. Keep the first 30 minutes of your day to start your task

It is always advisable to start your work within the first 30 minutes as you begin your day in the morning. During this period, your mind will be free from all distractions and you can concentrate more on your work. This helps to focus more and finally, helps you in a speedy completion of your task. 6. Do the hardest task first

7. Finish one task before arriving at the next

Do not ever jump to the next task without finishing the previous one. If you do this, you will always keep delaying your task and it will never get finished. Students must complete one topic first and then switch on to the next topic. This is because in every chapter, all the topics are interrelated. Each topic in the syllabus are provided according to a certain series and each subsequent topic has a link towards the next topic. Hence, you must learn the earlier topic before coming on to the latter one. Otherwise, you will never be able to understand topics correctly.

8. Change your environment

Before taking up a new task, you should remove all distractions from your sight. Students often end up in boredom during the process of learning that push them to leave their task midway and engage in other activities such as video games, etc. If any such situation arises, you are advised to engage in some brain boosting activities like puzzles, etc. that can improve your mental ability and help you to understand the concepts easily. You should change your environment if it is making you feel sluggish.

9. Spend time with people who are focussed

Surround yourself with people who inspire you to be focussed in your work and do your tasks on time. When you hang out with people who are motivated and hardworking, you will also become more like them. You should also read books written by motivational speakers on how to maintain focus in work.

10. Build your focus gradually

You need to build your focus gradually with time. You can start the first day with 30 minutes of focussed study and then increase your time as the week ends. 11. Get enough sleep
